Golf Cart Insurance- What you need to know

July 1, 2011 By Nibby Priest

It’s that time of year! Although golf is a popular sport year-round in warmer parts of the country, it is now prime golfing season all across the country, plus some communities are allowing golf carts on public streets to help save on gasoline.

Many of our partner companies that write home insurance offer scheduled personal property endorsement that can cover golf clubs and other golf equipment. Although these items would generally otherwise fall under Coverage C Personal Property of the homeowner’s policy, adding golf equipment to a schedule provides open peril coverage and avoids the deductible that applies to Coverage C.

Many avid golf-loving customers own a golf cart. However, most do not, so chances are they will take advantage of using one provided by a golf course. The homeowner policy coverage for golf carts can be a bit confusing since it varies based on whether or not the golf cart is owned or non-owned.

For more details, you can refer to the policy contract, endorsements, or contact our office.

For coverage needs that fall outside of the protection available under a homeowner policy, coverage may be available under an auto policy. Non-registered golf carts (those not licensed for road use) can be covered for liability, other than collision and collision. Registered golf carts (those licensed for road use) can get additional coverage, which might be appropriate for an owned golf cart that is used on public roads in a vacation area.

While the above information provides a good summary of golf cart coverage options, please remember that there are additional guidelines and exclusions that may apply. For example, some companies state than an owned golf cart must be designed to carry a maximum of 4 people and not exceed 25 miles per hour. Activities such as racing or rental to others are excluded. Please refer to the actual endorsement and homeowner’s contract for full details.
