IRS Tax-Exempt Status change

September 28, 2010 By Nibby Priest

An IRS deadline is fast approaching for Non-Profit / Charitable Organizations.  If you are part of a organization, then you need to check to see if your group’s name is on the IRS – List of Organizations.  Scroll down the page and you can pull up a list for each state.  There is a simple step to complete the required 990N postcard online to keep your Non-Profit status.

A new law went into effect in 2006, which most groups knew nothing about.  The IRS is granting a onetime filing to correct this.  If the groups do not file before October 15th, they will lose their tax exempt status and will have to pay tax on any income, plus anyone contributing to the group will not be able to claim a charitable tax donation.

Approximately two weeks left to get the word out and get these groups in compliance with the IRS.  We want to make sure that this doesn’t slip past any of our valued clients nor their organizations.  This can be big, so please pass along.

Has your non-profit complied with this IRS request?
